Renowned for having “the fastest hands in husking”, Karen Weideman is rewriting the playbook and leaving a trail of former opponents in her wake. After a messy divorce that resulted in a loss of custody of her children, Weideman was able to focus more on her speed and agility. She enjoyed a minor explosion onto the youth scene in 1995 with her impressive submission victory over Cynthia Brzezicki of 139(2-5) in the Young Silks Division. “When I’m husking, I go into a flow state,” says Brzezicki, icing her thumbs after a scrimmage. “I’m not thinking about anything else besides how many yellows I got stacked up.” Look for her this fall, when she’ll be leaving everyone else in the kernel-filled dust.
