While some individuals maintain the same favorite movie over countless years, others, like 27-year-old Monica Lawton, claim their favorite movie is whichever one they just saw.
Wow! How open-minded!
“I don’t know how some people never have a new favorite movie,” Monica told reporters. “Whenever I watch a movie…that’s my new favorite movie. Maybe I just have a short memory or something, but walking out of the theater, having just chilled for an hour and a half and consumed a large popcorn and slushy, it’s like…yeah, that’s the best thing I’ve ever seen.”
Makes sense!
While Monica sees nothing wrong with her endless capacity for enjoyment, others in her life feel a little differently.
“She can’t just pick a new favorite movie every week!” said Monica’s roommate, Bella. “Sure, she can enjoy going to the movie theater, but she needs to learn how to separate her enjoyment of the experience from the enjoyment from the film itself. Do you know how hard it is to be friends with someone who says their favorite film is The Super Mario Bros. Movie? Thank god that phase only lasted a week.”
Since then, Monica’s favorite movies have been: Fast X, Past Lives, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Elemental, Asteroid City, and Zoey 102.
Okay, girl! Sure!
“I just don’t believe her!” Bella said. “Like, some of those movies I could get on board with, but others? There’s just no way.”
Bella continued, adding, “Zoey 102 was a direct-to-streaming film…she can’t even claim she liked it because of the movie theater experience, so that one is probably just true. And that’s something I still have to reckon with. Which one is worse: being dishonest or just having terrible taste?”
However, when reporters asked Bella what her favorite movie was, she immediately went on the defensive.
“My favorite movie is Aquamarine, which isn’t, like, the most acclaimed movie of all time, and I know that!” she explained. “But it’s been my favorite movie since I was nine, and at least I’m honest about it. I would never claim my favorite movie is Book Club: The Next Chapter simply because I had a bucket of popcorn and got to turn off my phone notifications for two hours. It’s just weak of spirit and mind.”
As of press time, Monica had taken her roommate’s concerns into consideration, which is why after watching Aquamarine, she agreed that it wasn’t her favorite movie, instead sticking with Zoey 102.
“I’m not going to lie,” Bella told reporters. “That definitely stings.”
