Woman Contemplating Whether She’d Rather Be Loved and Hated or Thought of Neutrally

In a thought-provoking story emerging from Brooklyn, NY, 25-year-old Indigo Brooks is contemplating whether she would rather be the type of person who inspires extreme feelings – either love or hate – or the type of person who is thought of neutrally, which is a curse of its own.

This whole ordeal started when Indigo’s friend, Ellie Waters, brought up an enemy of hers. After elaborating on how much she hates this person, Ellie admitted, “He’s the type of person you either love or hate, and I guess I just hate him.”

After a long pause, Indigo said, “Huh, I suppose you’re right. There are people who live on the edges of the spectrum of affection and others, perhaps ourselves, who exist in the middle.”

Sources confirm Indigo does not typically sound like a narrator from a dramatic post-apocalyptic fantasy novel, but she’s going with that vibe today, regardless.

Indigo paused again, then said, “What type of person would you rather be? I think I’d prefer to be loved and hated, because then at least I’d know I stood for something, and that people thought of me at all.”

“Wouldn’t being hated feel bad?” Ellie countered. “I don’t know if I’d want to be hated.”

“Sure, but what if the price of being loved intensely by some is being hated intensely by others?” Indigo continued because she didn’t really have anywhere else to be and was excited to go down this theoretical rabbit hole. “Isn’t that what makes all the great artists and creators so captivating? No one achieves great things by inspiring neutrality.”

“I think it’s a false dichotomy,” Ellie responded, finally making things interesting. “Why can’t you be generally liked and sometimes loved? Why does it have to be loved and hated?”

“Well, it doesn’t have to be ‘loved and hated,’ but most of the time, it is,” Indigo countered, leaning forward in the way she imagined Ancient Greek philosophers did. “Because if you’re doing something wholly original, there will inevitably be people who hate it. To me, being thought of neutrally would be like dying a small death.”

Sources confirm this is a little extreme, but Indigo was in too deep to make qualified statements at this point.

“I’d rather be everything to a select few than nothing to no one,” she finished, making a mental note to write that down when she got home.

As of press time, both Ellie and Indigo had settled on the fact that all things considered, people probably do not think of them that much at all.
