In a story that’s making it really weird for everyone else at this upstate wedding, 48-year-old self-identified “boymom” Martha O’Donnell is having a really tough time watching her son, Tony, get married because she can’t shake the feeling that it should be her up there marrying him.
“It’s just tough to watch a young woman take over my role like that, you know?” she said as Tony’s fiancé walked down the aisle, kind of ruining the moment for everyone. “I’m not the only girl in his life anymore.”
Reporters found this comment pretty weird, considering there have been hundreds if not thousands of other girls in Tony’s life already, including his girlfriend of six years who is currently saying her vows. It is also unclear why Martha would want to be the only girl in her son’s life in the first place.
“You know, your kids grow up and start living lives of their own, which is great,” Martha said to the bride’s mom, Namrata Singh, seated next to her. “But don’t you just wish you could be standing there with them? Getting married as well? Perhaps even to them, in an ideal world? And that the other girl was gone, even dead?”
Namrata pretended not to hear this, lest the implications really sink in.
Sources could not confirm if Martha was crying tears of happiness or despair as Tony said his vows, but they could confirm she was crying way louder than everyone else.
“I mean, my son is the greatest man in the world, and I don’t think anyone – except me – would ever be good enough for him, excluding me of course,” she continued during the reception as Tony and his wife Isla took their first dance. “Don’t get me wrong – I love Isla. I simply wish Tony were marrying someone else. Someone who was a bit more like me. Me, even, perhaps!”
Guests at the wedding didn’t really understand her angle here, as she was making it abundantly clear she did not care for her son’s new wife and the future mother of her grandchildren.
Martha then had everyone clear off the dance floor and asked the band to start the First Dance song again so she could “show Tony how to do it right.”
As of press time, Isla’s parents were seen leaving the reception mutually agreeing “the mother-in-law is crazy.”
