After five months of Israel carrying out heightened attacks against Gaza, the U.S. military has expressed they are doing everything in their power to save Gazan civilians from the current humanitarian crisis caused by the weapons sent by the U.S. military.
During his State of the Union address, President Biden announced that the U.S. will build a temporary port off of Gaza to deliver aid to civilians in Gaza. He did not, however, make any mention of halting the shipment of weapons to Israel, which is a large part of why there is a crisis to begin with.
When asked about the recent developments regarding aid for civilians in Gaza, one U.S. military official said that the United States is doing everything possible to save Gaza’s starving population.
“We’re pulling out all the stops to save innocent lives in Palestine,” the official told reporters. “And by that, I mean we’re pulling out a couple stops. We’re definitely not going to stop the shipment of weapons that have aided in killing more than 30,000 people and injuring more than 70,000, but we are working towards providing aid for the remaining survivors, however long it may take to do so.”
Despite this port being estimated to take around four weeks to build while Palestinian civilians are dying every day due to starvation, President Biden has maintained that the proposed floating pier will provide life-saving aid to the Gazans who are still alive by the time it is finished.
Another U.S. military official expressed his support for the project, along with his frustration with Israel’s noncompliance with President Biden’s wishes.
“The actions that Israel has taken against Palestinian civilians are completely deplorable, which is why we’re working to deliver more aid as soon as possible,” he told reporters. “Sure, Israel may have committed these atrocities with bombs supplied by the U.S., but that’s completely out of our hands.”
“Are we still supplying Israel with weapons after seeing exactly how their military is using them?” the official continued. “Yes. But that’s why I believe we need a temporary ceasefire in order to safely deliver aid, before Israel resumes killing even more civilians using the weapons we sent to them. It’s just the right thing to do.”
