QUIZ: Should You Honor the History of This Mid-Century French-Style House or Gut That Shit and Make It Gray?

So, you’ve stumbled upon a beautiful house in a picture-esque meadow, and it’s got everything you could ever want: beautiful detailing, spotless amenities, and charming character to boot. With high ceilings and exposed brick like this, it can be hard to know what renovations to make. How can you elevate this house into the best version of itself it can be? Take this quiz to find out if you should honor the history and construction of this beautiful, mid-century, French-style beauty or, alternatively, gut that shit and replace everything with gray. Who’s to say?

How would you describe your ideal home?

  1. I’d love a house that is modern yet historic, a perfect balance that is difficult to strike. I’d love to be able to showcase the place’s good bones while also making the living space comfortable and cozy.
  2. Probably gray floors that are made to look like wood, gray backsplash to really accentuate the white walls, and OOH! Maybe a blue kettle for some color.

Did you look for a mid-century style home in particular?

  1. Yes! And I’m so thrilled to have found this one after looking for so long. This sort of character is tough to find just anywhere!
  2. Nah. I just wanted a blank canvas, but that’s okay! This can be a blank canvas if I decide it is.

What type of TV shows do you watch?

  1. A lot of the History channel, especially about the period of time this house was built! Really amazing stuff. I can’t believe I get to have a taste of it.
  2. Demolition Derby, where they throw old houses off a cliff, then blow them up with dynamite.

What is renovation about, in your mind?

  1. It’s about ensuring a place remains livable and comfortable without losing the facade or fundamental sense of integrity that made the house so special in the first place.
  2. It’s about making stuff clean and sleek and shiny. None of this “wood” and “curved archways” business.

RESULTS:

Mostly 1s: You should honor the history of your beautiful new home, and it sounds like you’re well on your way to doing this already! Your house is in great hands. Don’t be afraid to give your own personal touch, though!

Mostly 2s: Well, you should also honor the history of this house, but – oh, okay cool, yeah, just gut that shit. Sure, take a hammer to the walls and replace the beautiful granite countertops with a weird gray linoleum. While you’re at it, just shoot us in the face.
