How to Believe in Yourself When No One Else Believes in You (Including Me)

When you’ve got big dreams, you’re going to face adversity, but if you don’t believe in yourself, no one will. In fact, your lack of confidence is probably why I’m feeling so uncertain about you myself. Even though I don’t think you have what it takes to make your dreams come true, I do think you have what it takes to overcome my negative attitude and believe in yourself more than any of the rest of us do, and I’d like to share some tips on how to do just that.

Reflect on your positive qualities. Even though no one has noted them, you probably have some positive attributes. I don’t personally see them, but hey, I’ve been wrong before! I mean, there’s gotta be some. Everyone has something going for them, right?

Set achievable goals. Your dream can be divided into a series of small, realistic goals, none of which you are likely to accomplish. If your dream is to prove me wrong, what is one small goal that will get you closer to that dream? I really don’t see it happening, but I wish you the best of luck!

Reframe failure. Every failure is an opportunity. Everyone fails sometimes. And successful people pick themselves back up. Failure is not a reflection on you. It is merely a reflection of your inability to work hard, achieve your goals, and have the life you want. Even if you fail, you still have value, just not to the rest of us, including me, who has not seen you accomplish anything at all.

Learn from your mistakes. You’re going to make mistakes along the way. Many, many, many mistakes. My guess is that you’ll make more mistakes than most people would make, and they’ll have particularly devastating repercussions. Don’t worry about what other people think. What’s important is that you a) learn from your mistakes, and b) hide them from me at all costs. I don’t have time for more of your shit.

Visualize success. Close your eyes and try to get the image of everyone mouthing the word “loser” out of your mind. Now visualize yourself being the opposite of the bumbling idiot we all imagine you to be. Picture yourself accomplishing what you want in life. If you can see it, you can believe it. If you can believe it you can (possibly?) achieve it! I don’t know.

I really don’t think you have what it takes, but don’t let that stop you! Perseverance is essential at a time like this when it seems like the whole world, myself included, is against you.
