Remembered fondly as Mammy in Gone With The Wind, Hattie McDaniel was the first woman ever to win the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal as a maid. There’s no way to know for sure since she never came out to the press before her death in 1952, but it’s a badly kept Hollywood secret that Hattie was actually African-American.
