32-year-old marketing professional Kendra Jameson recently came to the stunning realization that while her interest in working is almost nonexistent, her interest in buying stuff is off the charts.
“My life just feels really out of balance right now, you know?” she said. “Like, I work for 40 hours a week and then when you factor in my commute, meals, and sleep, it only leaves me three, maybe four hours a day for buying stuff? It’s ridiculous. Fortunately, I’m pretty good at multitasking, so I do manage to buy a fair amount of stuff while I watch television. Thank God!”
Kendra says she has thought about quitting her job so that she can focus full-time on buying stuff, but she realizes that without the steady income, her purchasing power would be limited.
“It’s a real Catch-22, I think,” she said. “I’ve never read it but that reminds me – I would love to upgrade my bookshelves. Oh, and I really want a new nightstand! There was a super cute one that popped up on my Instagram feed this morning. I hope I saved it.” Kendra then opened the app to scroll her feed which is mostly comprised of influencer ads and sponsored content.
While Kendra mainly uses her social media to post memes decrying capitalism, she also takes advantage of the platform to promote her #OOTD TikToks and to tag friends in giveaways and contests that she hopes to win. Last week she had her sights set on a stained-glass opossum ornament.
“Work is such bullshit anyway. Like, was I really put here on this Earth to help corporations sell things?” she wondered aloud as she browsed the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. “Oooh, look at this shacket! Need.”
When asked if there are any aspects of her job that she does enjoy, Kendra mentioned that she actually likes going into work because of the neighborhood: “There have been some problems with package theft on the street where I live, so I started having all my Amazon deliveries sent to work. There’s much better security at that building.”
At press time, Kendra’s coworkers had started a GoFundMe to help her through this difficult time. Its description explains that Kendra “has a hard time focusing on things that don’t interest her” and “one thing she’s really not interested in is digital marketing and brand management. Like not even a little bit.”
