After living in my apartment for two years, I realized that my design choices were pretty unconducive to having company over. After all, how could I expect anyone to visit when my apartment was so uninviting? Because of this, I challenged myself to rearrange my apartment into a welcoming environment for others, even though I have no plans to invite anyone over, ever.
When I got down to brass tacks, I found that the only table in my entire home is a small desk in my own room where I work, stare into space, and eat all of my meals alone. Obviously not too useful for company! Plus, the only chair in my entire apartment is one that accompanies the desk. Clearly, that had to change, too, so I successfully sourced an entire dining table set and decorated it with a centerpiece of flowers and a tablecloth runner, fit for the Friendsgiving of my dreams, if I actually ever wanted to do that, which I really don’t. I honestly don’t even like the holiday. Why am I doing this again?
Anyway, after reading some interior design magazines, I learned that lots of people end up arranging their furniture around a TV, and that this limits the flow of conversations between you and your guests. This was a big relief because I don’t even own a TV — I always just watch shows and movies on my laptop, all by myself. However, I also realized that I don’t have any other living room furniture, so I finally decided to get a couch and coffee table in case my friends and I wanted to hang out without a television in the room. I guess we could play cards or something? Actually, I’m just gonna go ahead and get that TV.
My work didn’t stop there: I also realized that I didn’t have the right accommodations in case any of my hypothetical guests wanted to stay the night! Because of this, I made sure that the couch I bought could turn into a comfortable bed quickly and efficiently. It took me more than four hours to build, but now I can rest easy knowing that any of my friends and family can sleep over at a moment’s notice, even though I will never let that happen because I don’t like hanging out with people for more than five hours at a time.
After repainting my walls and putting everything in its perfect place, I couldn’t be happier with the results. Now that I’m $1,200 in debt from buying all of this furniture, I’m finally not afraid or ashamed to bring anyone over to my home, I just really don’t want to!
