If you’ve ever found yourself gazing at book store displays in awe of the stylish array of bright prints, wondering how all of those covers managed to pull off those daring colors, you should know that you can do it too! Just because you’re not on The New York Times bestseller list, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear your own bold prints with the confidence of a contemporary novel. Here’s how:
Create balance with neutral accents.
Even though you don’t have any capitalized white text to pair with the mixture of bold prints that you picked out, you can still choose a few neutral pieces of clothing that will have practically the same effect! Try pairing your colorful print with a white or black bag, or perhaps some beige sunglasses. You might not be wearing a book title or author name on the front of your body, but you’ll look almost just as good!
Try them as an accessory.
If you’re not super comfortable wearing bold prints as a main piece, incorporating them into your hair ties, bags, or shoes is the perfect solution. Your outfit won’t necessarily fly off the shelves like The Vanishing Half or Detransition, Baby did, but you’re not a book, so it’s actually sort of okay!
Wear them under a jacket or cardigan.
Similar to the last tip, if you just want a small pop of excitement in your outfit, partly concealing your eclectic design underneath another article of clothing that you can open and close can help you to invite a little more fun into your wardrobe. Imagine the pages of Little Gods on the outside, with the cover on the inside. That’s basically what you’ll look like!
When combining prints, make sure they share a unifying color.
Putting multiple prints together can be tricky, but not if you identify their shared color first. If two prints you’re using both use the same shade of green, then they should go great together! Honestly, the more prints the merrier, as we’ve seen from every successful modern fiction book from the last five years.
They say that you should never judge a book by its cover, but you should definitely take style inspiration from it! So, if you’ve been trying to work up the courage to dress like one of your favorite contemporary novels, go ahead and wear that bold, blobby, colorful print, girl! Just don’t be surprised when people try to read you!
