I’ve struggled to accept my curly pubes since I was a teen. From the moment they sprouted – thick, curly and unmanageable – I tried everything to tame them. I used irons, fancy shampoos, chemical straighteners. Everything! That is until I realized it was easier to just practice self-love. Now I’m more confident than ever and it’s all because I finally learned how to love my curly pubes.
Growing up and into my adult life, I spent countless hours trying to make my pubes straight and sleek like the pubes in magazines. Every night I would go to sleep dreaming that I’d wake up with naturally straight pubes. I hid my frizzy pubes under pants and skirts, hoping I wouldn’t stand out. Now I wear my curly pubes loud and proud, all because I learned to accept them in their natural state.
A lot of me coming to terms with my big messy pubes was learning how to dry them properly. I always wanted to be someone who could just “get out of the shower and go” but that’s just not something you can do when you have a forest of pubes to tend to. My morning routine takes a little longer now that I deep condition and diffuse my pubes every morning but it’s worth it for the confidence I walk down the street confidently with my pubes out at full volume.
I also doubted my natural pubes because let’s be honest, there’s a not a lot of representation out there in the media for big pube girls. When’s the last time you saw a TV show starring a curly pubed woman? Can you name any famous singers who are known for showing off their gigantic fuzzy bush on stage? No! I knew that to come to terms with my own huge pubes, I was going to be forging new ground. And that’s exactly what I did.
Yes, my confidence is intimidating to some. And yes, it’s true that the police recently stopped me and gave me a ticket for indecent exposure. But no court appearance can hamper my newfound pube-confidence.
Whenever I start to doubt myself, I just think of my ancestors — strong, sturdy women in the old country who passed their big curly pubes onto me. They worked hard to give their children a better life, and I wear their thick, curly pubes proudly as a result.
I will say, my friends have also been instrumental in helping me accept my bold, curly, pubes. They’ve said so many inspiring things to me like, “Wait but everyone has curly pubes” and, “Why would you want straight pubes?”
I’m proud to be leading the curly pube pack. Not everyone can have stick straight, blonde pubes like a movie star. Some of us have to rock pube realness.
Finally I can stand up tall and say: I love my curly pubes!
