Talk about tradition! Over the course of three different decades, Karen Bishop, 74, her daughter Lindsay, and Lindsay’s 18-year-old daughter Ellen have all been to the same protest in support of women’s reproductive rights in the United States.
“In the 70s I fought to win the right to abortion access,” says grandmother of three Karen Bishop. “So, imagine my surprise when I got to watch my daughter and granddaughter fight for the same identical rights in the 80s and again today.”
Awww! What a family tradition!
Bishop, a retired teacher, has been a champion for reproductive rights since her teens. As a breadwinner, mother, and leader in the community she was horrified to see the brutality and devastation that back-alley abortions wrought on the women across the country.
“It was such a victory when Roe v. Wade finally became law of the land. I remember thinking, ‘Thank God my daughter won’t have to fight for abortion again!’ Boy was I wrong!”
“I knew there were people who didn’t think women should have bodily autonomy, but I was still surprised in 1989 when Roe v. Wade was almost overturned in Webster v. Reproductive Health Services,” says Lindsay, a mother of two. “So I found myself at almost the same exact protest, 20 years later.”
Realizing how fickle the government’s support of women’s rights was, Lindsay brought her daughter Ellen to the same protests her mom brought her to as a kid.
“That decision gave states the option to severely limit Roe v. Wade on a local level, so I taught Ellen that we could never afford to take our reproductive rights for granted.”
Aww, talk about mother-daughter bonding!
“Are you fucking serious? This is really happening?” says Ellen while helping her grandmother design a new picket sign. “My grandmother had to protest this shit, my mom had to protest it, and now I have to?”
Sources confirm that these three lovely ladies are going to be having a mini family reunion this weekend to attend the same fucking protest they’ve been attending all their lives, this time all together. Family goals!
