In this challenging political climate, it’s very easy to become complacent in the face of our rapidly diminishing democracy. And that’s exactly why I have. If you still have the strength to #resist that I’ve completely lost, here are the top 10 acts of resistance that you should be doing because I stopped doing them a month ago and someone should be resisting on my behalf.
Wall-of-Us
Wall-of-us.org sends you a weekly email that contains four doable acts of resistance. Do one or do all of them, but definitely at least do one because I stopped doing mine last month, so please do it! I’ve got a lot going on right now.
Calling You Representatives
In democracy, it is vital to have your voice heard! So make it a regular part of your week to call your representatives because I’m going through a lot right now and I just can’t bring myself to do it anymore. Ugh, I hate calling people! I know it’s important for the world, but how am I supposed to keep this up for the next four years? Come on!
Make Small, Recurring Donations to Important Institutions
If you have even a small amount of money to spare each month, consider a recurring donation to Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, Campaign Zero, or any organization you feel supports the causes that matter to you! And also could you put it in my name? JK! I mean, not JK, I’m kind of serious.
Signing Up for Emails from Your Local Officials
This is a simple way to stay informed not only on what’s going on, but the on the positions of your elected officials. Sign up for emails from people you support and people you don’t support. Because I just unsubscribed from all mine cause honestly they were really starting to clog up my inbox.
Attend Local Meetings
Involve yourself in local politics! Or don’t because going places is effort. Also, I think I might be ignoring the very real fact that our democracy is not indestructible?
Volunteer
I don’t, personally, have any time because I am very busy with my phone, but you should volunteer for charities like Emily’s List or Boys & Girls Club. I think there’s still a child out there waiting for me to come play with her because I signed up and then never went!
So if you care about democracy, stay active in your pursuit of its safety. And if you can’t do that, just hope someone else is taking care of it like I do!
