5 British Murder Mysteries Your Mom Will Love and You Will Tolerate

Looking for something to watch with your mom can get pretty difficult – you might even have to compromise, which is why we’ve compiled a list of five British murder mystery shows your mom will love, and you will simply…tolerate!

Unforgotten (2015-)

This crime-drama follows two detectives who are on a mission to uncover the mystery behind an unsolved murder that occurred 39 years ago. Your mom is already obsessed with this premise because it’s British and about the past. But don’t worry – it’ll be a great way to spend time with each other for as long as you can put up with it (20-30 minutes)!

Five Days (2007-2010)

This miniseries follows five non-consecutive days of a police investigation into the disappearance of a young mother and her two children. Sounds depressing, doesn’t it? Well, not to your mom who loves crime and British accents! Buckle up, because your mom’s actually gonna want to binge this one with you!

Midsomer Murders (1997-)

Based on the crime-novel series, this show follows a Detective Chief Inspector who solves crimes in the wealthy, isolated English county of Midsomer. This show has been on for 22 seasons, which means that it’s tried and true, and also that your mom will probably be watching it for years and insisting that you watch it with her whenever you come home to visit!

Vera (2011-)

The lead character of this series is Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope, who’s obsessive about getting to the bottom of her murder cases in the rolling hills of Northumberland. Your mom will love this show for the beautiful scenery, but she definitely won’t explain what’s going on in the middle of the third season to you even though she made you watch it with her with no introduction. Oh well, it’s still something, right?

Deadwater Fell (2020-)

This British drama takes place in a remote Scottish village, where a fire rages out of control at the Kendrick home, killing a mother and her three young children but leaving the father alive, even though all five of them were drugged. This series is perfect if your idea of quality time with your mom is just her telling you “It was definitely the husband” every single episode. And you get to see if she’s right! Lucky you!

So if you’re hard-pressed to find something that both you and your mom can both agree to watch together, any one of these British murder mysteries would be perfect for her, and sort of okay for you! You might even learn to like some of them! Okay, yeah, probably not. Sorry!
