We Asked Our Former History Teachers Why They Didn’t Teach Us Black History but They Were Too Busy Also Coaching Football

Melissa Green has been at Olympia High longer than any other teacher there, and she’s also the least paid. We caught up with her during try-outs for the upcoming football season. When asked about the lack of Black history in her curriculum, she answered, “Why would I be teaching about Black history at football try-outs?”  After we reminded her that we were talking about her history class, she responded, “Oh! I haven’t taught history in years! I’m the PE teacher now.” But this was strange, because she’s still employed as the history teacher for two different classes, to which she explained, “Right. I guess those are just kinda study halls now!”
