QUIZ: Should You Try Cutting Your T-Shirt or Just Throw It in the Trash Right Now?

So, your old favorite t-shirt hasn’t been hitting the same as of late. You’re not really going for the “long” look anymore, but you would hate to lose this wardrobe staple. Maybe there’s a way to give it a second life, a way you don’t have to just get rid of it! Take this quiz to find out if you should try cutting your t-shirt or save yourself the time and effort and just throw it in the trash, seeing as it’ll end up there either way.

What’s the shirt material?

  1. It’s cotton from a reputable brand, so I feel like it’ll take well to cropping.
  2. It’s a polyester/silk blend, so if even one thread falls out of place, the whole thing will fall apart. Perfect time to crop!

Have you cropped a t-shirt before?

  1. Yes, very successfully! Some of my current wardrobe staples are old shirts I thought were dust before I cropped them and gave them a second chance.
  2. Yes, but every time I go about an inch too short, immediately wish I hadn’t touched it, put it in the back of my closet, and never take it out again. This time’s going to be different, though!

Would you consider hemming it after the crop?

  1. Sure, if I feel like it’ll look good with another inch off. It could be nice to give it a clean hemline, so the fabric doesn’t roll at the bottom, you know?
  2. What is that? Stop using made up words.

Can you trust yourself to cut in a straight line?

  1. Yes! I’m very careful and methodical about cropping my shirts.
  2. I find that the character of a crop lies in the moments where the unexpected happens.

Do you typically measure beforehand to ensure an even crop on all sides?

  1. Duh. Otherwise, I could end up cutting in a diagonal and ruining the shirt.
  2. Sorry, can you repeat that? I couldn’t hear you over the sound of my free-handed scissors.

RESULTS:

Mostly 1s: You should try cutting your shirt! No need to let a good thing go to waste, and you seem extremely qualified. Crop away, queen! And when you’re done, please tell us your secret.

Mostly 2s: Might as well cut out the middleman and just throw that shirt directly in the trash. We all know what’s about to happen. But hey, if you want a little arts and crafts project before you inevitably throw it away anyways, be our guest!
